COURSE 1 Design for Production

Room 350D
9:00am 5:00pm
Instructor: Professor Thomas Lamb

This workshop course presents an introduction to Design for Production (DFP). The objective is to teach engineers how to apply DFP and what to look for to determine the extent of DFP in proposed designs for naval and commercial ships. Student exercises will focus on understanding DFP principles and developing DFP concepts. Topics to be covered include definitions and principles, application to basic and detailed design, build strategy approach, simulation, and integration with production.

Fee: Member $ 175
Non-member $ 325
All courses are expected to be approved for continuing education credit.

COURSE 2 Practical Seakeeping

Room 350E
9:00am 5:00pm
Instructor: Dr. Edward Lewandowski

This course will provide the background necessary to understand seakeeping specifications and reports. After a general discussion of performance requirements, the specification of the wave environment will be described, including definitions of sea states and wave spectra as well as identification of sources of data. Determination of the ship response to the waves will next be explored, including use of model tests and prediction tools; the available tools will be described and compared. Quantitative measures of seakeeping performance, including absolute and relative motions, motions-at-a-point, slamming, MSI and MII, will be defined. Use of these quantitative measures in conjunction with performance criteria for the development of operability indices will be explained. Finally, several examples will be considered, including a detailed examination of a seakeeping test report and development of an operability index.
Familiarity with basic naval architecture is assumed. Note that the theory of ship motions will not be developed in this course; the emphasis is on the understanding and practical use of the input and output of the available prediction tools.

Fee: Member $ 175
Non-member $ 325

All courses are expected to be approved for continuing education credit.

COURSE 3 Floating Offshore Engineering Facilities and Mooring Systems

Room 350F
9:00am 5:00pm
Instructor: Professor Robert E. Randall

Floating offshore engineering facilities continue to serve the offshore industry and produce energy around the world. The purpose of this continuing education short course is to provide naval architects, marine and ocean engineers, and other interested conference participants an introduction to floating offshore facilities and their mooring systems. The topics covered include a brief summary of offshore production facilities, regulatory and class societies rules and guidelines, environmental data and extreme meteorological events (hurricane, cyclone) that control the design, evaluation of environmental loads, hull types (semi submersibles, tension leg platforms, spars, and ship shapes) and arrangements, stability, and mooring systems. Example calculations for the mooring design of a selected floating offshore production facility will be conducted to demonstrate the concepts presented.

Fee: Member $ 175
Non-member $ 325

All courses are expected to be approved for continuing education credit.

STUDENT SOCIAL & STUDENT CONGRESS DESIGN COMPETITION
(Design/Build/Measurements/Qualifications)

Ballroom C
1:00pm 6:00pm

Student Social - For a majority of students this will be their first chance to meet and network with other SNAME student members. The student social is designed as an icebreaker to allow students to try out and hone their networking skills amongst their peers in a friendly environment. The popular and well attended Student Design Competition pits teams of students against each other designing, building, and running sea trials (and making design adjustments), in a contest for the best boat made of provided materials that meets design rquirements kept secret up until the start of the competition. Time constraints plus keen minds and lots of creativity result in a hotbed of student design, construction, testing and trials in a pool of water set up on the Expo floor on Thursday. The winning team receives both recognition and an award.

Ticket: None Required
